Mediation helps quite the mind and the thoughts that pass through it. This can increase your attention-span and awareness of yourself. Self awareness leads to more meaningful relations and understanding. This also helps the mind by tempering the spirit. Visualization puts the mind and body in the chemical and emotion state similar to the activity. This is important because as the body seeks what it is familiar with and wholeness it will conform to what you see in your minds eye.
